Finally I could experience Real Hallowe’en in Scotland. Before I had the day, my friend Scott taught me that Scottish traditional activity of Hallowe’en is ‘guising’. This involved people going house-to-house in disguise, usually reciting verses or songs or jokes in exchange for food or wine or some small coins. On the night, 31st Oct. When we opened door, a mad scientist and a skeleton stood in front of us. As they sang in a loud, we showed many snacks in a ball, they snatched them at once. And after that, Scott’s daughter Elsie recited two verses in French and some jokes. I couldn’t understand meaning of verses, the performance was so cute and amazing. I thought that her small recital was just a piece of Scottish long history.

 

いわゆるハロウィンの「trick or treat」はアメリカ製で、その起源は古代ケルト人の信仰にある。細かい情報はWikipediaに載っているから、ここでは割愛するとして（アイルランドではどう、この時代はこう、とか諸々書いてある）、スコットランドでは「guising」という儀式だったそう（友人曰くなので、本当かどうか保証はない）。若者が仮装して、食べ物や、ワイン、お金、その他提供された物の引き換えに、歌を謳い、詩を朗読し、ジョークを披露したりする。ぼくが応対したのは、マッドサイエンティストと骸骨のお化け。はいお菓子と差し出すと、餌をまっていた子犬のように掻っ攫っていった（笑）。屋根裏部屋を借りているフレーザー家の長女・エルシーは、「guising」の伝統に倣って、黒猫姿で詩を2編読んでくれた。ちょうど訪ねてきていた、おばあさんの第一言語・フランス語での朗読だったので、内容はこれっぽっちもわからなかったけれど、朗々と歌い上げている様はとても可愛らしく、素敵だった。長い歴史のなかの一齣として成り立っている。そんな気がした。
