This Thursday, I escaped from the excitement of Edinburgh. My destination was Melrose. This town is belonging to Scottish Borders. Borders—that’s the beginning place of the Border Terrier. Tweed Water flows east across the Border region in Scotland and northern England. The Tweed is one of the great salmon rivers of Britain and Tweed cloth derives its name from its association with the Tweed. I wanted to see the scenery Border Terrier began and imagine that they run around the field with their faces like old men or have the wind in their body with bristle hair. After I walked around Melrose (we can do for only five minutes. So tiny, pretty town!), I got on a bus and got off at the foot of a bridge (there was no bus stop), kept walking for about one hour, and then, finally arrived on Scott’s View where the most famous Scottish author Sir Walter Scott had loved. Eildon Hills stood blandly, the fields and grasslands spread like tartan cloth, grey clouds flew without any breaks and the Tweed wound among them. It was pretty beautiful time to spend time there. It is three more days to go back to Japan. There is my good company Loch waiting for me. I think I should take him to the scenery someday.

 

スコットランドの夏休みもいよいよ過ぎて学校が始まり、フェスティバルの盛り上がりも今週末の土日を残すだけとなった。人並みも減って平日の客入りは少なくなるから、木曜日、エディンバラから抜け出すことにした。バスを乗り継ぎ2時間。向かったのは、メルローズ。この町はボーダーズ地方に属する。ボーダーズ。そう、ボーダーテリア発祥の地だ。ツイードの語源であり多くの鮭が遡上するツイード川は、イングランドとの境界線の辺りを源流として、このボーダーズ地方を流れ、北海へと注ぐ。ボーダーテリアが生まれた風景を一度目にしたかった。あの硬くて粗い剛毛や、ムスッとしているかと思いきや人懐こい小父さん顔が、どんな風を受けて、どんな丘を走っていたのかを知りたかった。メルローズを一回り（5分で回れるくらい小さい）して、ふたたびバスに乗って、バス停もない橋のたもとで下ろしてもらったら、歩きつづけること1時間。スコットランドの生んだ大作家ウォルター・スコットが愛した見晴らしの丘、Scot’s Viewに立った。穏やかに聳えるエイルドンヒルズ、タータンチェックのような畑や牧草地、途切れることのない薄灰色の雲、そのあいだを縫って流れるツイード川。美しい時間だった。帰国まであと3日。もうすぐロッホとの再会が待っている。いつか彼をこの風景へ連れてきてやろうと思う。
