Gujo-Hachiman, Gihu. There is the Gujo Odori dance festival that is one of the three most important traditional bon dance festivals in Japan. The festival started over 400 years ago and it is typically held on thirty-three festive nights, from mid-July until the first weekend in September. The hair salon “enowa” opened at the small village named “Maki” in Yamato-cho which is a little distant from Hachiman-cho. I designed CI, business card and member’s card toward the opening of hair salon on the 21st of January in 2017.

Maki village being the hair salon “enowa” was the base of the land lord, Tou clan from Kamakura period to the beginning of Sengoku period, and there are many other places related to preserve vestiges of those days. The landscape of the mountains of Shinowaki, the pure stream Kurusu River, the living life with the benefits of these nature, old houses, fields and a rich historical heritage after the medieval period—we can feel the view of nature and the mindset of Japanese people who compose them on many poems. ‘Maki’ is one of the village of “kokin denju,” meaning a specific poetic interpretation of the Kokinshu.

The hairdresser and the manager Ozawa Ikuko was born in Gujo-shi. She has spent her time in other cities after graduating high school, but she decided to come back her hometown again when she considered her future life. After moving to Gujo-shi, she could get the clear idea and the venue to live her hometown by the cooperation of her friends who she had ever seen and some fate with the land. The name of hair salon “enowa” means ‘en-no-wa (circle of fate)’. She said, “I could find my new life by many many fates given by the nature, people who have humane and deep history of my hometown. I want to manage my hair salon with cherish the circle of fate.” I tried hard to design so beautiful feeling of her. As “enowa” has the shape of circle ‘o’ in the middle of the name, we decided that the circle means its shop mark. The symbol colour is purple because purple has been using as the colour of fate for a long time—when the ancients compose Haiku or Tanka in Kokinshu etc. It is just some kind of fate that the village is the field of Kokindenju.
